On March 12th, a landmark tobacco case with up to 27 billion dollars at stake got underway in a Montreal courtroom. A group of Quebec smokers claimed in a class-action lawsuit they were duped for years by big tobacco companies -- as they became addicted to cigarettes and then suffered from serious health problems. Imperial Tobacco Canada lawyer Deborah Glendinning was confident she would successfully defend her client. (The other defendants were JTI-Macdonald and Rothmans, Benson-and-Hedges.)
