On March 12th, a landmark tobacco case with up to 27- billion dollars at stake began in a Montreal courtroom. A group of Quebec smokers claimed in a class-action lawsuit they were duped for years by big tobacco companies, as they became addicted to cigarettes and then suffered from serious health problems. Rob Cunningham of the Canadian Cancer Society said he expected answers from what will be a lengthy trial. (The civil case was considered the biggest in Canadian history. It also marked the first time tobacco companies went to trial in a civil suit in Canada.)
