Montreal MP Thomas Mulcair was chosen to succeed the late Jack Layton as leader of the federal NDP. In his victory speech at the convention in Toronto, Mulcair echoed the words of Layton in saying the party's greatest accomplishment in the previous year's election wasn't winning seats in Parliament. (Mulcair won 57.2 per cent of the vote in a fourth-ballot victory over chief rival Brian Topp.)
