BC introduced a new-and-improved provincial sales tax to replace the harmonized tax that was defeated in 2011's fractious referendum. BC Finance Minister Kevin Falcon said the new seven per cent PST would include the same exemptions as the old provincial tax. (British Columbians turned down the HST in a referendum the previous summer. Falcon, who once called the PST a stupid tax, said he still didn't like the PST, and called the new version a "better stupid.")
