A firm 2014 deadline was set for the end of Canadian military involvement in Afghanistan. Prime Minister Stephen Harper said it was important for Afghans to start taking responsibility for their own country. Harper made the announcement May 21st at the close of the NATO summit in Chicago. He said that while Canada won't have boots on the ground, it will contribute 110 million dollars a year over the three years for the Afghan military.
