Three horses died following a crash during the chuckwagon races at the Calgary Stampede. There was no collision, but a lead horse for the team of driver Chad Harden went down suddenly, bringing two other horses with him. Stampede spokesman Doug Fraser said everyone connected with the Stampede was devastated. (In 2010, two horses died of heart attacks during competition. Stampede officials hoped to complete the 100th anniversary competition without any animal deaths.)
