Incumbent Shawn Atleo was re-elected as national chief of the Assembly of First Nations. It took three ballots of voting for Atleo to claim the 60 per cent of the vote he needed for victory. Atleo said he would get aboriginals working together to better assert their rights. (Opponents had said Atleo was too close to the Harper government, but other chiefs suggested they did not want Atleo's first-term efforts to evaporate.)
