Quebec voters returned the separatist Parti Quebecois to power after nine years in opposition, albeit with a minority government, winning 55 ridings to the Liberals' 49. PQ leader Pauline Marois became the first female premier of the province. In her September 4th victory speech, Marois had a message for Anglophone Quebecers. (Her victory speech was marred by an attack that saw two people shot, with one of them killed, while a fire was set outside the building where Marois was speaking. Police arrested a 62-year-old man at the scene.)
