After a career that spanned nine federal and provincial elections and a stormy nine-year run as Quebec premier, Jean Charest announced September 5th that he was stepping down. A teary-eyed Charest made the announcement in Quebec City, a day after losing his own seat in the provincial election and seeing his party form the official Opposition. Charest said he was very proud to be a Quebecer and a Canadian. (Charest went to the Quebec Liberals in 1998 from the federal Progressive Conservatives where he served as leader. He won eight consecutive elections in Sherbrooke -- four federal and four provincial.)
