Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird announced Ottawa was cutting ties with Iran over its sponsorship of terrorism and amid fears about the safety of Canadian diplomats in the country. He made the announcement September 7th in the Russian city of Vladivostok. (Baird said he was worried about the safety of diplomats in the Iranian capital following recent attacks on the British embassy there. Ordinary Canadians were advised to avoid travel to Iran.)
