Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty announced November 26th that Bank of Canada governor Mark Carney was chosen to run the Bank of England, beginning July 1st, 2013. It marked the first time a foreigner had been tabbed to run Britain's venerable central bank, which dates to 1694. Carney said he was leaving behind good people and a strong institution. (Carney was appointed to run the Bank of Canada in February, 2008 and led it through a tough recession.)
