On March 2nd, Quebec Constable Steve Dery was shot and killed while responding to a domestic dispute in the remote northern community of Kuujjuaq (KOO'-joo-ak). A second officer was wounded. After a standoff, the shooter was found dead inside the home and believed to have committed suicide. On March 9th, hundreds of mourners packed into an Ottawa cathedral to pay tribute to Dery. Dery's brother Benoit gave a moving eulogy at the funeral as more than 800 police from across the region gathered to pay respects to the 27-year-old, whose father was a Mountie. (Dery's funeral received full police honors, including a march by an estimated 700 police officers down Sussex Drive to the cathedral.)
