On April 7th, Halifax teenager Rehtaeh (ruh-TAY'-ah) Parsons was taken off life support after a suicide attempt three days earlier. Her family said the 17-year-old struggled with depression following months of bullying linked to an alleged sexual assault by four boys at a house party in 2011 and tormented by a photograph of the alleged incident that was distributed online by her peers. The girl's family said they were failed at almost every turn when they tried to get help. Jason Barnes, the longtime boyfriend of Rehtaeh's mother, said it was a sad string of failures that led to the girl's death. (Parsons' father and mother met with Prime Minister Stephen Harper on April 23rd.)
