On June 17th, interim Montreal Mayor Michael Applebaum, who had cast himself as the man to clean up corruption scandals plaguing the city, was arrested on 14 charges including fraud, conspiracy, breach of trust, and corruption in municipal affairs. He resigned the next day, but maintained that he was innocent of the charges against him. (Police said the charges stemmed from an investigation into two real estate projects in the Cote-des-Neiges and Notre-Dame-de-Grace districts.)
