One-time Ontario NDP premier and former interim federal Liberal leader Bob Rae, a fixture on Canada's political scene for 35 years, announced he was leaving politics so he could focus on his new role as chief negotiator for First Nations in talks with the province about development of the Ring of Fire mining project in northern Ontario. He said it was important personal work for him, and that was why he decided to resign his seat. Rae resigned his Toronto-Centre seat on July 1st.
