As rain-swollen rivers burst their banks across southern Alberta, more than a dozen towns declared states of emergency. In Calgary, officials started a series of rolling evacuations that resulted in nearly 75-thousand people being forced from their homes. The grounds of the Calgary Stampede were swamped by the flood waters, but Stampede president Bob Thompson said it would take something far worse to rein in the annual extravaganza. (Some Stampede events scheduled for the Saddledome were cancelled due to flood damage to the facility, while other events were relocated to other locations.)
