A runaway train carrying crude oil derailed in Lac Megantic, Quebec, igniting explosions and fires that incinerated the small town's center, killing 47 people and forcing the evacuation of nearly two-thousand. The train had been left unattended in the town of Nantes, 12 kilometers uphill from Lac Megantic, where firefighters were called to handle a locomotive blaze on the same train a few hours earlier. Karine Blanchette worked in a bar at the epicenter of the explosion. The 35-year-old Blanchette said her friend had two children who were now orphans.
