The Canadian Auto Workers union and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada formally merged into Unifor, Canada's largest private sector union with more than 300-thousand members. Jerry Dias was elected the first president. In a fiery acceptance speech, Dias said it was time for an end to the erosion of workers' rights. (More than four-thousand people gathered in Toronto for the union's founding convention.)
