The Canadian Auto Workers union and the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers Union of Canada formally merged into Unifor, Canada's largest private sector union with more than 300-thousand members. Jerry Dias (DYE'-as) was elected the first president. In his acceptance speech, he said it was time for labor to go on the offensive. (More than four-thousand people gathered in Toronto for the union's founding convention.)
