On September 13th, the Bloc Quebecois expelled MP Maria Mourani from caucus for her stinging criticism of the Parti Quebecois government's proposed charter of values, which would forbid public employees from wearing more visible religious symbols. The next day, she quit the separatist party and remained as an Independent MP. The Lebanese-born Mourani said she and others worked hard to make the sovereignty movement inclusive, but the proposed charter hurt that effort. (The Parti Quebecois government's plan would forbid public employees from wearing more visible religious symbols -- including hijabs, turbans, yarmulkes and larger-than-average crucifixes.)
