Kingston Penitentiary, Canada's most notorious federal prison, formally shut its doors after 178 years. It was designated a national historic site in 1990. Former guard Mark Joyce said the prison was home to the most difficult inmates. (Among the penitentiary's more infamous inmates were killers Paul Bernardo and Clifford Olson.)
