An Edmonton judge approved a class-action lawsuit against Alberta company XL Foods over E. coli tainted beef that forced the largest meat recall in Canada's history. About 200 people in Canada, as well as in the United States, had already joined the suit. Edmonton lawyer Richard Mallett said it would have been difficult for each person to go to court separately in the case. (During the outbreak in 2012, health officials confirmed 18 people tested positive for the specific strain of bacteria linked to meat from the company's plant in Brooks. Mallett said the suit's 200 plaintiffs included others who got sick but, for various reasons, didn't get tested.)
