The federal government issued a directive forcing rail companies to tell municipalities when they transport dangerous goods through their communities. But the information would be provided months after the goods were transported. The directive came months after the deadly July derailment and explosion in Lac-Megantic, Quebec. Transport Minister Lisa Raitt said it's not about preventing another Lac Megantic disaster, but about giving municipalities the tools they need to better respond to emergencies. (The July 6th, 2013 derailment and explosion in Lac-Megantic killed dozens of people and decimated the center of the picturesque Quebec town.)
