Jim Flaherty, the representative of Whitby-Oshawa, Ontario for over two decades and finance minister at both provincial and federal levels, died suddenly on April 10th at age 64, less than a month after resigning from federal cabinet to prepare for a return to the private sector. He steered the Canadian economy through the global financial crisis of 2008-2009. In 2013, he revealed he was suffering from a rare and painful skin condition but continued on despite the side effects of the potent steroids to treat it. Prime Minister Stephen Harper offered his condolences to Flaherty's family as his wife Laureen stood crying at his side. (A state funeral was held in Toronto on April 16th.)
