A massive tailings pond breach at Imperial Metals' Mount Polley Mine in central British Columbia sent 10-million cubic meters of water and 4.5-million cubic meters of toxic silt into Polley Lake and Quesnel (quinn-elle) Lake. It prompted a week-long ban on drinking or bathing in water from surrounding lakes and rivers. Chief Bev Sellars of the Soda Creek Indian Band said the breach would be devastating for her community.
