The Supreme Court of Canada announced it would not hear an appeal from Ontario farmer Michael Schmidt, who long championed the right to sell and drink unpasteurized milk. He was fined $9,150 in a 2011 conviction under provincial health-protection laws. Since farmers are allowed to drink milk produced by their own cows, Schmidt's customers bought ownership interests in his dairy cows. Schmidt said now his customers buy shares in the farm instead of cows and the government hadn't cracked down on him again since he made the switch.
