Prime Minister Stephen Harper said 69 Special Forces soldiers were sent to northern Iraq to advise and assist local forces in the fight against the militants known as the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. He revealed the figure during a second straight day of question-period pressure by the New Democrats and Liberals. The opposition parties said Harper was itching for Canada to be part of the Iraq War, but Harper said there was no comparison between the two situations. (Both the New Democrats and Liberals wanted Parliament to vote on the deployment, but Harper said that wouldn't happen because the soldiers were not on a combat mission.)
