On September 16th, a marathon bargaining session with the help of a master mediator resulted in a six-year tentative contract between the BC government and the public teachers' union. It was ratified on September 18th, allowing half a million students to start their school year. Union president Jim Iker said he was happy with the deal. (Some 86 per cent of the more than 31-thousand union members who turned out voted in favor of the deal.)
