On October 22nd, a gunman opened fire at the National War Memorial in Ottawa, killing ceremonial Honor Guard reservist Corporal Nathan Cirillo. The gunman then commandeered an idling ministerial car and drove to nearby Parliament Hill's Centre Block, where he injured a guard at the front doors, then engaged security forces in a gunfight before being killed by sergeant-at-arms Kevin Vickers in the Hall of Honor. NDP leader Tom Mulcair said Canadians were unified in grief and stricken with disbelief -- but while shaken, would not waver.
