New research suggests climate change is threatening to release huge amounts of carbon from Alberta's vast northern wetlands. University of Birmingham researcher Nick Kettridge says his work shows that even small increases in temperature would cause peat bogs to start drying out, making them more susceptible to fire and release large amounts of carbon into the atmosphere. (Kettridge says many of the bogs would eventually be replaced by stands of willow bushes and poplar trees.)
