A Quebec judge is being widely criticized for her refusal this week to hear a woman's case unless she removed her hijab. Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard calls the case disturbing, while the Canadian Civil Liberties Association says the judge violated the woman's Canadian Charter right to freedom of religion. Liberal leader Justin Trudeau was also blunt in his criticism. (But a court spokeswoman (Annie-Claude Bergeron) says Judge Eliana Marengo will not bow to public pressure, adding that judges are masters of their courtroom and set the rules of the court as they see fit.)
