First Nations communities are getting funding to study how to open northern Ontario's isolated Ring of Fire region to development. The federal and Ontario governments announced Sunday they will contribute more than 785 thousand dollars to study establishing a year-round transportation corridor. Federal Natural Resources Minister Greg Rickford says the project will position the region to capitalize on projects such as the Ring of Fire while opening up the region to development. (It has been widely agreed that economic development of the Ring of Fire would be very limited without some way to connect it to the rest of the world.)
