The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled not to reinstate the murder conviction for a man accused of killing a Winnipeg teenager more than 30 years ago. That means there will be a new trial for Mark Grant, who was found guilty of second-degree murder in 2011 in the abduction and murder of Candace Derksen. Candace's mother, Wilma Derksen, says the ruling comes as a shock. (The Manitoba Court of Appeal overturned the conviction in 2013 after Grant's lawyer argued the trial judge was wrong to deny evidence that could show the 13-year-old girl might have been killed by someone else. A new trial was ordered, but provincial prosecutors appealed to the Supreme Court after being granted leave to do so in 2014.)
