A judge has sentenced an Edmonton mother to 15 years for beating, neglecting and starving her two-year-old twin girls before one of them died in hospital. The judge described the woman as being depressed, overwhelmed and unable to cope after moving to Canada from Algeria. Court heard it was the mother who physically hurt the children, but her husband did nothing to help them. The woman's lawyer, Daryl Royer, says it's more difficult to understand the father's conduct. (The judge gave the woman a little over four years of credit for time she has already spent in custody. The father was also sentenced to 15 years.)
