Parti Quebecois leadership front-runner Pierre Karl Peladeau says Quebec needs to become independent if it is to truly fulfil its economic potential. Peladeau made the comments at a news conference where he outlined his economic platform. The controlling shareholder of Quebecor was asked how a sovereign Quebec would be richer, considering it is scheduled to receive 20-billion-dollars in transfer payments from the federal government for 2015-2016. His response was that, unfortunately, Quebec is still sending a lot of money to Ottawa. (Peladeau also said he wants to protect head offices in the province, fight tax evasion and clean up public finances. He and the four other P-Q leadership candidates are preparing for the first of five debates which will be held Wednesday in Trois-Rivieres. The new party leader will be chosen in May.)
