The CRTC says by March of next year, cable and satellite television providers must offer their customers a trimmed-down basic T-V channels package, costing no more than 25 dollars a month. And by the end of next year, they'll have to offer either individual channels on top of the basic service, or smaller bundles of channels. The government is welcoming the move -- something it's been pushing for. But critics including Ian Morrison of Friends of Canadian Broadcasting say it'll hurt the economy. (CRTC chairman Jean-Pierre Blais acknowledges the changes will likely cost some people their jobs as already struggling T-V channels lose revenues and go off the air.)
