A group of Christian doctors is going to court to challenge a new policy that they say will force them to refer patients to procedures that go against their conscience such as abortion and assisted suicide. The College of Physicians and Surgeons policy says that if a physician is unwilling to provide care because of religious beliefs, an "effective referral" must be provided to another health-care provider. Christian Medical and Dental Society of Canada executive director Larry Worthen says providing a referral is akin to participating in a procedure. (Worthen says it's not a conflict between doctors and cases, particularly in the cases of abortion, as a patient does not need a doctor referral.)
