The pending closure of the only school in the community of Coles Island, New Brunswick is just the latest example of how an aging population and outmigration are impacting rural communities across Canada. The latest figures from Statistics Canada show deaths outpaced births in New Brunswick last year for the first time. Steve McCready, who led the charge to save the school, says it's crucial to a community. (Deaths outnumbered births for the second year in a row in Nova Scotia and the fourth consecutive year for Newfoundland and Labrador. StatsCan says the problem is complicated by young people leaving the Atlantic region in search of work and starting families in other provinces.)
