Veterans Affairs Minister Erin O'Toole has unveiled a new critical injury benefit -- a one-time tax-free payment of 70-thousand dollars for injured soldiers and veterans. The proposed new scheme is separate from the disability awards system, which a Commons committee has said is less generous to soldiers wounded on the battlefield than the courts are to civilians hurt in workplace accidents. O'Toole says the new benefit is retroactive as far back as 2006.('"..has ended.") (Veterans advocates have complained that the government has been neglecting Canada's soldiers once they return from battle. But over the past several weeks, O'Toole has announced multiple new or improved benefits for veterans and their families.)
