With the federal budget set to be tabled later this month, the opposition parties are on the attack over the government's income splitting tax scheme. But with the finance minister and prime minister out of town, it was up to Conservative MP Candice Bergen to defend the government's fiscal policies in the House of Commons. (Finance Minister Joe Oliver says the government delayed tabling the budget until April 21st because it needed to assess the implications of the dramatic fall in oil prices and its instability on the Canadian economy.)
