The jog to the general election began more than a year ago, with the Harper government's 2014 budget just barely holding back the news that the books were likely already balanced. But as finance Minister Joe Oliver makes that official with his new budget today, opposition critics including the NDP's Nathan Cullen say Oliver will have to do more than buy a pair of sneakers to get away from the consequences of cuts to important program spending. (Following in a long tradition of finance ministers buying new shoes before presenting the fiscal blueprint, Oliver was fitted yesterday with a pair of "New Balance" runners.)
