Members of Parliament are paying their respects today to the Speaker of Canada's Senate, Pierre Claude Nolin, who died yesterday after battling a rare form of cancer. Government House Leader Peter Van Loan told the Commons that Nolin may have been a Conservative, but he was independent-minded when scrutinizing government legislation. (Nolin became Speaker just last November, the unanimous choice of Conservative, Liberal and independent senators who saw him as a smart, respected man who could steer the upper house through the final dramatic chapters of the expenses scandal that has rocked the Senate to its foundations.)
