B-C Mines Minister Bill Bennett says he expects a decision in June on whether the Mount Polley mine will reopen, months after a massive tailings pond breach caused an environmental disaster in central B-C. Bennett says jobs are at stake, but the protection of people and the environment from poor mining practices will play the primary role in the final decision. (Protests by a women's aboriginal group were launched at the Toronto Stock Exchange, B-C government offices and in at least two US cities yesterday.)
