2015-04-30 | Vietnam Draft Dodgers

Preview Clip

It was 40 years ago today that the Vietnam War came to an end. It was a war that led many US draft dodgers to come to Canada to avoid serving in the conflict. The federal government estimates up to 40-thousand made the trip north of the border. Eric Nagler, who rose to fame in Canada on the popular kids T-V show "Sharon, Lois and Bram's Elephant Show," says his application for conscientious objector status was denied by his draft panel and he was told to report to Fort Dix in New Jersey. Instead he crossed from Vermont into Quebec in 1968 at the age of 26. (Nagler returned to the States in the 1970s but decided to move back and settle in Canada.)
