Thousands of demonstrators have taken to the streets of Montreal and elsewhere in the province to mark International Workers Day. The protests began during the morning rush hour, with organizers saying the focus was on big banks and the Quebec Liberal government's cost-cutting measures. The demonstrations brought together a variety of groups that included unionists, students and social groups. Joel Pedneault (ped-noh), spokesman for a coalition of groups, explains why banks were being targeted. (The biggest march, featuring several thousand people, was noisy but orderly. It ended at the Montreal Stock Exchange. The protesters were constantly under the watchful eye of helmeted, riot-equipped police.)
