The two main political parties in Prince Edward Island won't make abortions available to women in their home province, a stark contrast to the position taken by the two party leaders who are trying for a breakthrough in Monday's election. The issue sparked heated exchanges last night in the final televised leaders debate of the campaign. The Liberals and Progressive Conservatives refuse to change the government's policy. NDP Leader Mike Redmond says the recent harsh winter proves PEI women don't have proper access to abortion. (The Green party also promises to offer abortions in the province if they are elected.)
