Justin Trudeau says a Liberal government would hike taxes for the wealthiest one per cent to pay for more generous child benefits and an across-the-board income tax cut for the middle class. But the Harper Conservatives are directing their attention somewhere else. Trudeau also says he would reverse a doubling of contribution caps for tax-free savings accounts from 10-thousand dollars back to five-thousand dollars. Employment Minister Pierre Poilievre told the House of Commons that amounts to a tax cut for middle-income earners. (Trudeau says the Liberals would cut the 22-per-cent tax rate for middle income earners to 20.5 per cent. But under the Liberal plan, a new, higher tax bracket would be imposed on those with taxable incomes over 200-thousand dollars a year.)
