The Harper government has long opposed to expanding the Canada Pension Plan, but is suddenly considering giving people the option to funnel more earnings into the program in order to grow their nest eggs. Employment Minister Pierre Poilievre says the prime minister has a low-tax plan for retirement savings that includes a voluntary option for the CPP. (But opposition parties say a voluntary expansion of the plan doesn't go far enough to ensure people are in good financial shape when they retire. The Liberals are proposing a mandatory expansion of the CPP.)
