A new report on marine conservation efforts in Canada says the country is severely lacking in the quantity and quality of its protection for ocean ecosystems. The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society says policies around marine protected areas are too weak to be effective. Spokeswoman Sabine (sa-BEE'-na) Jessen says ocean conservation lags behind protections given to ecosystems on land. (The organization says marine protected areas cover only one per cent of Canada's ocean territory.)
