Longtime Quebec sovereigntist icon Jacques Parizeau has died. The blustery, mustachioed Parizeau was premier during the 1995 Quebec referendum which saw the federalist "No" side defeat sovereigntists by a whisker after a bitter campaign. After the October 30th vote, Parizeau blamed the sovereigntist loss on "money and the ethnic vote." From The Canadian Press Archives (October 31, 1995), here is what he said the following day as he tried to clarify his remarks. (Parizeau was 84.)
